Since apparently my view regarding this in the FAQ was kind of vague, I'll re-state:

Doujinshi icons ARE allowed. Fanart is a no, but we decided that since doujinshi is commercial ANYWAY, there's no harm in letting people use icons from it, as long as at least one sample is from the original work.

Since it's difficult to tell the two apart, pretty much the only doujinshi icons you should send in are manga coloring ones and if we suspect that the icon may be of fanart, we'll ask you to verify it by showing us what doujinshi it's from.

If you would like to change your samples in lieu of this, just send another email to ljamia.mods@gmail.com, being sure to let us know that it's a correction.

The official nominees are:

Under the cut!Collapse )

Note that there were two withdrawals. Samples, should you choose to pick them for yourselves, are due by March 10th. Please email them to ljamia.mods@gmail.com.

Here's a repeat of the message from the noms post:

Once you've been officially listed as a nominee, it'd be great if you could email us (ljamia.mods@gmail.com) with a few sample icons that pertain to each of the categories you were nom'ed to. We'll end up doing them ourselves if you don't (so voters have something to go on in case they don't recognize your name), but it'd save us a lot of trouble. 8D We will need 4 icons for each category you're entered in. If you're entered in Biggest Trendsetter, the Congeniality Award, or Most Popular, don't worry about example icons for those.

Also, you can repeat icons, so if you have an icon that you want to use, say, for Best Textless AND Best of Death Note, feel free, just let us know. Icon comms will need to compile a set of their best icons, however. Each iconmaker has to contribute at least one icon to the set, to be fair. It is fine to send us more than 4 icons if you have more than 4 iconmakers in your community. Most Underrated icons are basically just what you perceive to be your best icons.

If you haven't yet, check out our sister comm, who's still doing noms right now:

It's your time to VOTE~

It looks like the iconist noms are starting to slow down, so they will be closing tonight and the official nominations will be set. Please nominate if you haven't gotten a chance to do so, pimp the awards out a few more times, whatever.

All iconists already on the list, please be sure to have your samples in by March 10th.

Hey everyone! :D Welcome one and all to the 3rd annual LiveJournal Animanga Iconmakers Awards. So here we are with the actual iconist nominations post! (what you've all been waiting for, lol)

This is how it works. During this nomination round, we will nominate people for the various awards. This will go on for about a week and a half, give or take, depending on how much participation we have. To nominate someone, reply to the comment that has the name of the category you're nominating someone for. Comment with the name of the nominee in LJ-tag form. (ie: bob) OPTIONAL: IT'D BE NICE IF YOU COULD ALSO PUT THEIR NAME IN SUBJECT OF THE COMMENT SO IT MAKES IT EASIER TO NAVIGATE ONCE THE COMMENTS START TO STACK.

For your nomination to count, you will have to have 3 people comment to your nomination saying that they second, third, and fourth your nomination.

Note: If there are less than three "official" nominees, the ones closest to being official will also be counted until there are at least 3 official nominees. Ie: if there are only 2 Death Note nominees and bob has been thirded but not fourthed, he will also be counted.

Other Rules: You may not nominate yourself, nor can any nominations be made anonymously. Anonymous comments are disabled. Also, do not comment outside the comments we've already posted. That is to say, you can comment to any of my comments, but you cannot post your own. This is mostly just to prevent clutter.

There are 20 categories that pertain to actual series--these were chosen by YOU, the voting public, in a voting session. Then there are 8 categories that pertain to people who MAKE series. These were also chosen by the voting public. The other 22 categories are more general, such as "Best Textless Icons", etc. This makes for 50 categories in total.

Be sure and pimp this post so we can get lots of nominations. :3 Thanks for reading!

* If you do not wish to have your own nomination count--that is, you are uncomfortable with receiving an award, having your icons posted, etc., you have only to tell me so by commenting to the FAQ and stating that you wish to be withdrawn. You can do this at any time before voting is put up. I respect people's right to choose and if you don't wish to be entered, it's in your power to stop me.

The official nominees are:

BECAUSE I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE TROUBLE LOADING PAGES WITH LOTS OF COMMENTS, THE LIST OF NOMINEES HAS BEEN POSTED TO ITS OWN POST HERE.

FAQ:

Would it be alright to send in icon samples that haven't been posted in my icon journal yet? About sending the sample icons in; do they have to be ones that are already made or can you make a few new ones?

You can send whatever you like. If it's an icon you don't want anyone to take yet, be sure that you specify so we can mark it accordingly. :3 You can make new icons to send in if you really want.

When's the deadline for sending the samples? :o

Two weeks after nominations close, which is not for a while.... I want to say March 10th. :x Somewhere around there.

I got nominated for the 'congeniality' award, but I can't think of a way that displaying icons would fit into that. Am I supposed to submit anything in?

Nope, no samples for Congeniality.

Nominations have slowed down a lot. The comments for series have stayed below 900 for the past few days, so I think it may be close to time to start iconist noms, which I know everyone's been waiting for.

If there aren't more than 900 comments tomorrow (or later today, technically) then I'll go ahead and start iconist noms. :3

I've been thinking about some things, may or may not go through with all of them.

The definitely

- If Pokemon makes it as a category at ljvgia, it WILL NOT make it as a category here. Having two of the same category going at the same time is really pointless, the same people will win both. Since Pokemon is primarily a game, I'm letting the VG Awards take it if it makes it into their top count.

- Please keep in mind that our contest does not allow fanart icons when we collect samples. I'm thinking waaaay ahead, but I thought I would get that out there now. I'm not going to get into the argument of whether or not fanart icons are legitimate, good, bad, whatever. There's enough drama about that. But from 2006, we have disallowed fanart icons, so even though there have been more of them in the recent year, this rule is not being changed. So when you are nominating series, try not to nominate ones that have mostly fanart icons being made, because when it comes time to nominate iconists, you'll be out of luck when all of them just icon fanart. :|

- Don't nominate series just for the hell of it or just because you like a series. If that series doesn't have at least 3-4 good iconists to compete, it will be REALLY POINTLESS if that series makes it in. This happened last year when certain series got nominated, so I'm trying to just err plan ahead?

- "Biggest Trend-follower" will be dropped.

The maybe

- I'm thinking of perhaps just accepting all series that get 20+ noms rather than just the top 15. And then any series that doesn't get at least 3 official iconist nominations will simply be dropped?

- If a mangaka/creator's main series gets nom'ed, their nom as a mangaka/creator will be dropped. EXAMPLE: Miwa Shirou mostly just does DOGS, right? So if DOGS gets nominated, I think having Miwa Shirou as a category would be pointless since it's just the same iconists being nominated again.

- What if I only accept samples that were made in 2007/2008? I mean, this is a yearly contest. What's the point in nominating people who made icons for that fandom back in 2006 and haven't done any since?

- Getting rid of the "Animated icons" category? It's true that not many have been made in recent years. Even last year, it was the same people that got nom'ed as in 2006, hrmm.

The "just plain no"

- Guys, I'm not getting rid of the "Manga Coloring" category. As I've said before, "Best Manga" is an overall category. "Colored" and "Manga coloring" are two sub-categories of "Best Manga", basically. There are people that are good in one and not the other (LIKE ME HAHAHalskdjad). That's why those sub-categories exist. The "Best Manga" category exists for people who are presumably good at BOTH. I think the distinction between the three is very clear, and I'm not going to take any of the three down.

Oh right, I will be recruiting mods. It just wasn't on the top of my to-do list since it's just series/creators noms right now and that doesn't take 5 moderators to do. XD

If there's anybody who's interested in helping out, let me know here. However, I will have to have at least heard of you and I will ask around to see how trustworthy you are. I don't want any funny business, after all, these awards are my baby. :|

Various duties will include:

- Tallying. :D MY FAVORITE. Not.
- Gathering icon samples after iconist noms are through in March. HAHA ANOTHER FAVORITE OF MINE. :|
- Deleting spam/misplaced comments. It happens.
- Dealing with drama-llamas.

I should warn you, don't accept this job just because you want to look cool and be in charge of something. These awards take a lot of effort. Maybe it's just because I did it mostly on my own the past two years, but I spent countless hours tallying, finding samples, coding the HTML pages, etc. So don't volunteer if you don't have free time. If you say you want to help and then tell me later you can't help because you have final exams or something, I will be very put out.

Comments? Questions? I accept Pocky, too. :'D

FAQ
Lol I forgot to do FAQ threads in the two pre-contest pages. Well, this is the general FAQ post to be used from now on, then. If you have any questions about the contest, current rounds, etc., please feel free to ask here.

03 February 2008 @ 12:56 pm
This isn't really an official ROUND, but I thought I'd include this, as well. This is the list of categories (apart from series/creators) that I had last year.

Best Colored Manga Icons
Best Manga Coloring Icons
Best Manga Icons
Best Textless Icons
Best Animated Icons
Best Anime Icons
Best Typography
Best Use of Color
Best Monochromatic Icons
Best Cropping
Most Unique
Biggest Trendsetter
Biggest Trend-follower
Most Underrated
Best Obscure Icons
Best Use of Resources
Best Crack
Best Tutorials
Most Popular Iconist
Best Icon Community
Best Pair of Iconists
PHOENIX DOWN PLZ
Congeniality Award
Best Iconist

While I have a few of my own ideas (that I don't want to reveal, it'll be a surprise!), I'd like your input on what more categories you'd want, or which of these are stupid and need to be removed. Reply to comments that you agree with so I have a general idea on what to include/not include, but I may just set up polls later on.

This round is so I can determine which "Best of" mangaka/creators to use. This is the first time that I'm doing this, but basically I just want to get more input on what should and should not be included since I'm not exactly the most HIP! person out there. ¦D

This is a rather loosely-organized round. Basically just comment with one mangaka/creator/group/etc that you would like to see a "Best of" category for, and people will comment to that comment if they are in agreement with your nomination. :O Please try to nominate creators for which lots of icons are made, and preferably also made by a wide variety of people so that we have more diversity. xD Optional: You may also choose to include a few of the series the mangaka/creator is known for, just in case other people aren't familiar with the name.

I won't be too strict with things as I suspect that comments will start piling up. So if there are a lot of comments and you don't have the time to thumb through pages hunting for a particular creator, just start a new thread and I'll add those votes to the other ones.

You can nominate/vote for as many creators as you like, but please make sure that there is only one creator per nomination comment for organizational purposes. ♥ Again, no creators that are known for making hentai or hardcore yaoi, please. :x Let's keep these awards worksafe!

The top 8 creators with the most votes will be the ones that I make categories for. ♥

Nominations will close at midnight (central time) on February 29th, 2008. If you have any questions, please reply to the FAQ post I have open. :3
